How to replace wheels on bar cart?

Hi everyone, I have a bar cart here that we ordered online

'Costway 3-Tier Serving Trolley Mobile Bar Cart w/Glass Holder & Removable Tray - Bunnings Australia'

Similar to the link above. I was wondering if anyone knew how to install new wheels on to these? I know the swivel castor wheels at Bunnings have a base plate, but these look like screw-in ones. One of the holes in the top right corner has fallen out, so I'm not sure how to fix that one either. Any help would be appreciated!

Re: Wheels on Bar Cart

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @lilyrose13. It's great to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about repairing a cart.

It looks like the threaded insert that the screw-in wheel attaches to has also ripped out, which is why the wheel won’t stay on. That means you won’t be able to reuse a screw-in style caster without first repairing or replacing that insert. In this situation, base plate castors are usually a better option, as they can be screwed directly into the cart’s frame for a stronger hold.

Have you tried reaching out to Costway support through the contact portal in your order confirmation email? They may be able to provide a replacement insert or a replacement frame section with inserts, which could save you some work.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Wheels on Bar Cart

Do you know which castor wheels might be a suitable option. The base of the metal frame is 2cm wide so would you recommend screwing them into the faux wood base then at all four corners?

Re: Wheels on Bar Cart

Hello @lilyrose13

I propose testing the bottom wood base shelf to see if it comes off. If you install the wheels on the bottom of the wood shelf it technically will be carrying all the weight of the cart. I don't recommend installing the wheels on the timber shelf as it might give way and cause an accident. As an alternative, I suggest installing 42 x 19mm 1.2m DAR Pine Standard under the cart and fixing them in place onto the steel frame using Zenith 8G x 35mm Galvanised Countersunk Rib Head Metal Screws. You can then screw the castors onto the timber strips.

I've placed a quick sketch of the configuration to give you an idea on how it can be done. My best advice is to drill pilot holes to prevent splitting the timber boards.

Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1 and @JoeAzza for their recommendations.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: Wheels on Bar Cart

Good Evening @lilyrose13

That is a nice cart and worth going to an effort for repairing  I went straight to the same solution as @EricL has outlined and sketched  Its the easiest way I can think of that will support the cart and be sturdy. Even if you manage dto replace that caster in the enlarge hole that is there I really wouldnt trust that socket. No poing in loosing your drinks with an "oh no" moment!

With replacement castors, I would actually go into Bunnings as they are all showcased on the shelves and you get a feel of what you want style wise and also support wise. I prefer a little more robust ones but they generally come in at a higher overall height.

Hi @lilyrose13 , I agree with @EricL

You could also look at going to castors mounted directly to the metal base, try to remove the plastic insert at the bottom of the trolley, then drill the metal base to take the new castors using cup head bolts, and wheels, see below.

Thank you so much  I'll see what I can do. I definitely do not want a wheel popping off and timber goes all our drinks haha

Re: Wheels on Bar Cart

I know I am an annoying individual.

But for me, should you go down @EricL's wood path - looking at how ridiculously thin that metal tube is - I would adhere the wood onto the frame with bolts and nut rivets.

Outta curiosity @lilyrose13  - do you know why the castor was ripped from the frame?

Hi @lilyrose13,

The last time I did this I went for the corner block thing.

And two of each below.
