I wanted to update this old console to create a fresh coastal feel. I'm really happy with how it turned out! A full video of the process is also available on my Instagram - taylermayd_
Before
After
Cabot's Stain and Varnish
Cabot's Cabothane Clear
Pine dowel (for handles)
Dulux paint (for paint wash)
Foam brushes
Sanding pads
AEG orbital sander
Ryobi wet and dry vacuum
Ryobi multi tool
Carbide scraper
I started by removing the handles and all of the existing finish. I used a carbide scraper to remove the varnish, followed by an orbital sander to reveal the natural timber. I worked up from 120 to 400 grit sand paper to ensure a smooth finish.
I used my Ryobi multi tool as a detail sander for the hard to reach areas.
Once the old finish was completely removed, I gave the sideboard a thorough clean and applied a light paint wash;
I then used a foam brush to apply one light coat of Cabot's stain and varnish, followed by two coats of just the clear; I sanded with a high grit sandpaper between coats to ensure a silky-smooth finish.
For the handles I cut some pine dowel to size using a mitre box, sealed the dowel with clear coat for durability and fastened to the drawer fronts with wood screws. And this is the final result!
Beautiful results, @TaylerMayd. I love the finish you've achieved, and it certainly matches your coastal brief.
You've done a wonderful job removing the previous coating; I know how much work that can be.
Many thanks for sharing, and great work.

Hello @ziggymanny9
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us.
I believe they used Cabot's Stain and Varnish and Cabot's Cabothane Clear. Let me tag @TaylerMayd so that they can verify the product that they used on the table.

hi @ziggymanny9 if you are referring to the paintwash I used the Colorbond colour Evening Haze, diluted with water. But @EricL is correct about the stain/varnish applied after - it is the colour Hickory
a video of application is on my Instagram page if that helps Taylermayd_
Hi TaylerMayd Love you sideboard fantastic job, looks classy and the handles are different than what I've seen around. Can I ask what shade paint you have used for a Wash and and also what colour Stain did you use. Looks gorgeous and by the way, love the name TaylerMayd, how original. 👍
Hello @Diesel07
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us.
TaylerMayd actually answered this just recently. If you read the last two posts, you'll see the products used. They were the Cabot's Stain and Varnish and Cabot's Cabothane Clear. The paint wash used is the Colorbond colour Evening Haze, diluted with water and the stain/varnish applied after is the colour Hickory.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.

What stain was used in this DIY project in the July Bunnings magazine?
Hi @kitchen,
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.
We have added your comment to the relevant post, so if you have a look above, you can see that @TaylerMayd recently answered this question.
They started by giving it a paint wash with the Colorbond colour Evening Haze diluted with water. They then applied one light coat of the Cabot's Water Based Stain And Varnish in the colour Hickory, with two coats of Cabot's Cabothane Clear to finish.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
