How to hang frameless mirror on coated MDF surface?

Hi,

i am needing advice regarding the best approach to hanging a frameless full length mirror to MDF shelving with a  coated surface. I believe it may be a melamine coating but have been unable to find any details. It is the matte white cube shelves. I have attached images of shelving unit & Mirror.  The mirror is 2.8 kg.  I want to attach it to the side of the shelving unit. Would the mirror and glass liquid nails be suitable for this surface? Do I need to prep the area prior to gluing, ie; light sanding.  A similar mirror was attached  using heavy duty double sided tape, however it didn’t adhere and fell and smashed. , Any help appreciated. Thank you KatIMG_8820.pngIMG_8821.png

Re: Hanging Frameless Mirror to Coated MDF Surface

Hi @Kemcg3,

Thank you for your question and welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

You are correct that these shelves are made of melamine-coated chipboard.

The challenge when attaching anything to melamine with an adhesive is that the surface is smooth and non-porous, which makes it harder for adhesives to grip. At 2.8 kg the mirror isn’t especially heavy, but because you’re mounting it vertically on a slick surface, preparation and the right product matter.

Liquid Nails Mirror Metal and Glass Adhesive is formulated for use with mirrors and is safer because it won’t damage the mirror's backing. Before applying, lightly scuff the melamine surface with 240 Grit Sandpaper to give the adhesive something to key into, and wipe it clean to remove dust and grease.

Apply the adhesive in vertical beads and allow ventilation for curing. You’ll need to support the mirror with masking tape, wedges, or temporary props until the adhesive sets fully, usually 48 hours.

If you are still concerned, it would be worth considering mechanical fixings such as these Spring Loaded Mirror Clips, which can be screwed into the side of the cabinet.

Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Re: Hanging Frameless Mirror to Coated MDF Surface

Hi Jacob,

I do have one more question regarding the mirror attachment,  that you may be able to assist me with, please?
The unit’s frame is only 3.5 cm thick and the instructions for installing the mirror clips advises to drill the holes at a depth of 2.5 cm. Would you recommend drilling the hole at this depth or shallower given the thickness of the MDF ?

Thank you.

Re: Hanging Frameless Mirror to Coated MDF Surface

Hi @Kemcg3,

There would be no issues drilling the holes to the advised 25mm depth.

Just make sure to wrap some tape around your drill bit 25mm down from the tip to give you a guide for when to stop.

Let me know if you have further questions.
