Hi all... I am currently sanding my Tassie Oak bedroom suite back to raw wood to re-varnish. Any tips/ suggestions on the varnish to use. I am currently thinking of a lime wash or just a clear varnish.
Hi @Kipper1,
A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fabulous to have you join us.
With how naturally beautiful Tassie Oak is, my personal preference would be a satin clear varnish such as this Cabot's Satin Water Based Cabothane Clear. This clear finish will enhance the warm, honey-toned grain of Tassie Oak without overpowering it, allowing the timber’s character to shine through.
To varnish your Tassie Oak bedroom suite, start by lightly sanding all surfaces with fine-grit sandpaper such as this 180 Grit Sandpaper to smooth out imperfections and open the grain. Wipe away dust with a damp cloth. Apply the first coat using a good-quality synthetic brush or roller, following the grain. Let it dry completely then lightly sand again with very fine sandpaper such as 320 grit to remove any raised grain or nibs. Wipe clean and apply a second coat. Repeat the process for a third coat for added depth and durability. Let the final coat cure fully before use.
