How to drain a dishwasher and a washing machine into the same pipe?

How to drain a dishwasher and a washing machine into the same pipe?

Hello, I have a small kitchen so want to install a dishwasher in my laundry next to the washing machine. I know I can get a 2 way tap splitter to connect both inlet hoses to the tap, but what can I do to connect both outlet hoses to the same drainage point? I've only got one drainage point on my laundry sink (see photo). Is there a splitter or something so I can drain both the washing machine and dishwasher into this pipe?

Re: How to drain a dishwasher and a washing machine into the same pipe

Hi @clairebus,

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community and thank you for your question.

Unfortunately, I am not aware of a product that can be used to direct two drain hoses into a single outlet.

Is there a spigot on the trap underneath the sink?

I have a similar situation at my place, and I run one hose into the drain hole like you have above and run one through the side of the laundry cabinet and have it attached to the spigot on the trap.

Could this be an option for you?

It's not a fantastic solution, but could you also just run the second drain hose over the side of the basin?

Allow me to tag @Noyade, @JoeAzza and @Dave-1 to see if they have any ideas.

Re: How to drain a dishwasher and a washing machine into the same pipe

Hi @clairebus and @JacobZ

Would an irrigation T-Piece work?

I measured 19-20mm internal diameter of my washing machine hose which looks very much like yours, Claire.

What's the internal diameter of your new dishwasher hose?

I was thinking connecting it on the rise just before the loop. Maybe silicone and those pipe tighteners (name?) would assist.

Cheers.

Re: How to drain a dishwasher and a washing machine into the same pipe

Hi @Noyade,

I had thought of a similar solution but was concerned that because it is a T as opposed to a Y, the hoses would not be able to drain freely because of the angle of attachment.

Having had another think over things, I thought you might be able to adapt a BOSTON 3/4" Washing Machine Y Hose Adaptor for this use by cutting off the top where I have indicated below so it can fit into the drain hole in the laundry basin.

The threaded ends are roughly the same diameter as a drain hose, so you should be able to slip them over the thread and fix them in place with a hose clamp

I haven't personally tested this, but it seems like it would work.

Re: How to drain a dishwasher and a washing machine into the same pipe

Not that I've ever investigated this @JacobZ  - but when the washing machine draining pump stops, I'm assuming there is still a lotta water left in the hose?

Hence I thought it wouldn't matter much where the connection for a Y or T piece occurs?

Just a thought.

Heading to Coles now for milk and bread. 😁 I might just come home with magic beans and an axe handle. Cheers Mate.

Re: How to drain a dishwasher and a washing machine into the same pipe

Hi @clairebus  and @JacobZ

@Here is another suggestion if you can do the tee piece or y piece as recommended by @JacobZ  , @Noyade @would be to use a square plastic funnel with extension hose that fits into the existing drain , then you can attach both hoses using plastic saddles mounted to the inside of the of the funnel using stainless steel screws, hope this helps.

Here are some items I suggested from Bunnings.

Re: How to drain a dishwasher and a washing machine into the same pipe

Good Afternoon @clairebus

Is there any chance of a photo of the underside piping of the sink? I am think of @JacobZ 's first suggestion of the way he has his might be the easiest outcome. As in if there is a spigot off the side of the drain pipe you can use, so a hole through the metal stand (with associated rubber gromet) and into the spigot to drain freely.

I checked and I do have a spigot that would work, I would just need to cut a whole in the side of the sink but it seems like a much easier job now I've got great advice and done my research! Thanks so much for your help

I'll definitely be going for this option now I've checked and found a spigot on the side, just have to cut a hole for the hose to go through to get to it but I'll get my tools out and give it a crack myself. Thanks for your help!
